This week, I had the opportunity to conduct onsite training at WJAR TV in Providence, RI, ( Sinclair Broadcast Group Station) and it was truly a remarkable experience to witness the history and technology of this station. My focus was on delivering cloudbase automation training, and as I stood at the center of the room each day, I was surrounded by the technological advancements that have shaped the history of radio and television in America. While explaining the operations and control of a cloud based broadcast operations system, it became clear to me how far broadcasting has evolved from its origins. I am enthusiastic about the progress of broadcast technology, but I also recognize that not every traditional operator or engineer shares this sentiment, due to the steep learning curve associated with these advancements. Similarly, as IT professionals transition into the broadcast industry, we encounter the challenge of bridging the gap in knowledge, understanding, and experience. This gap presents a significant challenge for all involved. Being a self titled broadcast specialist, I Believe my contribution is to Bridge the GAP and help usher everyone I consult with or train to a greater understanding of today's broadcast cloud computing.

I remember recording backup commercial breaks on quad tape. The 3/4 inch tape sequencer would go out from time to time. The quad was the backup. Circa 1983 KFDA-TV Amarillo, Texas.

When worked there it was owned by Outlet Broadcasting and the radio and tv studio was located on the top floor of the department store. The nice part was got a nice discount in the department store also. For me everything there was RCA equipment TK 76 two tape machines and my induction to the RCA cart machine.. Every broadcast intern should be required to play with that beauty. After I left JAR I went to Seattle and KING TV and then ESPN when it first went on the air. But Seattle was in my heart and took a job at KIRO TV and the rest was history.

👀 Ever wondered what makes real-time applications like video streaming so seamless? It's not just about the bandwidth.... I'm in the Sunday Zone & here is a quick one 😉 User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is all about speed. Unlike TCP, UDP is connectionless, meaning it doesn't wait for acknowledgments before sending more data. This makes it incredibly fast and efficient for certain use cases. Some salient features of UDP:1. Quick & Connectionless: Sends data without the handshaking rituals of TCP.2. Lightweight: With a minimalistic header of just 8 bytes, UDP reduces overhead, enhancing speed. Is UDP Inefficient? Some might argue that UDP's lack of delivery guarantees and ordering makes it inefficient. But in reality, it's about choosing the right tool for the job. UDP excels in scenarios where speed is critical and some data loss is acceptable.UDP in Video StreamingConsider live video streaming - where even a slight delay can ruin the experience. UDP shines here by delivering data packets continuously, without waiting for acknowledgments. This results in a smoother, buffer-free streaming experience, Essential for live broadcasts and real-time interactions.Handling Packet Loss: Modern streaming algorithms smartly handle the occasional lost packet like Quick UDP Internet Connections, often imperceptible to viewersScalability: UDP's statelessness makes it easier to scale to a large number of concurrent viewers.🔥 UDP might not be the star of the show, but it's and important element of service delivery that keeps our real-time applications running smoothly.💡 Have you leveraged UDP in your projects? Share your experiences and insights!👍 Like and ⭐ Save this post for later reference in your network design discussions!#devops #cloudarchitecture #networking #udp #videostreaming #systemdesign

A huge benefit of this workflow is that it enabled existing technology to become a seamless workflow. So often it seems that a vendors approach to a seamless workflow is to start all over but the client then ends up locked into a single vendor solution. Marquis is consistently illustrating that it is is possible to join disparate technologies into a seamless whole. Better for the budget, better for the environment and statistically more likely to succeed, research shows that an alarming number of big change projects fail.

An interesting article from IBC about the IT / Broadcast engineer background in our industry. We all know that "broadcast engineer" meant something quite specialised, but that has become less obvious with the adoption of large, cloud-based systems and broadcast/IP standards like SMPTE2110.However, while a CAR now looks more like a NOC, the very specific demands of delivering extremely high quality video and audio to millions are still present. So it's never as simple as IT vs. Broadcast: it's a blend.Good engineers are good engineers. They are, and always have been, the life blood of our industry.#broadcasting #SMPTE2110https://lnkd.in/ezrah77a

Exciting Discussion Topic: Streaming media - TCP or UDP?Hey Connections,I recently came across an interesting article on GeeksforGeeks reading about TCP protocols and they mentioned streaming media under TCP protocol, and I believe there might be a mistake regarding the protocol used for streaming media. Let's dive into it and have a productive discussion! In the article, it was mentioned that streaming media falls under TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). While TCP is widely used for various applications that require reliable data transmission, such as file transfers and web browsing, streaming media commonly utilizes UDP (User Datagram Protocol).UDP, being a connectionless protocol, offers a best-effort delivery service without guaranteeing packet delivery or order. It lacks the overhead of establishing and maintaining a connection, making it more suitable for real-time streaming applications like streaming media. Although UDP can result in occasional packet loss or out-of-order delivery, these issues can be addressed using buffering and error correction techniques at the application level. On the other hand, TCP ensures reliable delivery by guaranteeing packet order and retransmitting lost packets, which is crucial for applications where data integrity is of utmost importance. However, due to the additional overhead and latency introduced by TCP's mechanisms, it is not the go-to choice for real-time streaming scenarios. It's important to note that different video streaming protocols may utilize either TCP or UDP, depending on their specific requirements. However, in the broader context of video streaming, UDP is commonly preferred for its lower latency and reduced overhead.I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this topic. Have you encountered similar discussions or differing viewpoints on the protocol choice for video streaming? Please share your insights and experiences in the comments below! And let's also tag GeeksforGeeks and Sandeep Jain in this post to get their perspective on the matter. 🤔🔍#VideoStreaming #TCP #UDP #Networking #Technology #Discussion #GeeksforGeeksLooking forward to an engaging conversation!Regenerate response

🤦🏼♂️ Lost in media IP transformation? 🤷🏻♂️Many #broadcasters are about to or have initiated the inevitable IP media transformation towards modern, efficient media operations. Netflix paved the way, demonstrating how broadcasters can transition from traditional setups to #cloud services and #internet distribution. Despite concerns about the "#broadcast #quality", the internet infrastructure has proven to be far more efficient and resilient than its reputation suggests. However, IP transformation is not a straightforward process. There are numerous rabbit holes, and dead ends to navigate when dealing with unmanaged networks and integrating newer IP systems with older systems and routines; all while on a steep learning curve with new IP and cloud practices. Thus, it is not uncommon to occasionally find oneself lost in the midst of an IP transformation. You may have already engaged with your preferred consultant or system supplier who has served you well in the past. However, you/they might now realize that this transformation is far more complex and comprehensive than anticipated. Their lack of holistic technical expertise outside their domain, unfamiliarity with various types of (better) gear and technologies, and insufficient practical know-how could leave youto manage the consequences.Have you considered seeking assistance from a Broadcast (#ATSC, #DVB, #ISDB) and #Streaming SWAT team, with deep technical insight and know-how about cloud, on-prem, hybrid service operations, and end-to-end distribution to media devices? An media tech-expert who walks the walk and talks the talk, and with recommendations rooted in your technical system capabilities, goals, requirements, timeline, and budget; and who:►Understand your broadcast and streaming technology stack in detail, along with your essential end-to-end tech-challenges. ►Know how cost-effective updates can enhance your existing technology stack and reduce the need for new gear, risk, cost, and time. ►Know which IP-based media processing and operations work best with your goals and existing technology stack. ►Not only know protocols like #SRT, #NDI, #SDI, #RTMP, #DASH, #HLS, #LL_HLS but also be experts in the practical implementation and technical caveats. ►Can provide you and your team with useful guidance, and practical assistance in your technical decisions and challenges, helping your team reach their goals on time and within budget. Our approach ensures that you will not mistakenly be bound by proprietary technical limitations. We continually elevate new industry standards with proven innovative technologies and smart practices to overcome challenges in modern media operations and distribution. We greatly appreciate your time in reading this far. If you find this interesting, let’s start a conversation. Send us a message on LinkedIn or hello@mediathand.com, and we’ll get back to you. Thank You.
